WiMAX (World Interoperability for Microwave Access) means global interoperability of microwave access. It is a wireless metropolitan area network technology based on the IEEE802.16 standard. The maximum transmission distance of WiMAX is 50 kilometers, and the maximum data rate of each sector is 70 Mbit / s per sector. On January 29, 2004, the 802.16a specification was also officially approved. The standard runs on the 2GHz to 11GHz spectrum. It is an extension of the IEEE802.16 specification and supports non-line-of-sight connections.


The latest 802.16e task force is currently intensively developing support specifications for mobile 802.16 clients. These specifications can support clients to switch freely between 802.16 base stations, so that users can roam freely between service areas. In addition, the newly formed Mesh Network Special Committee within the 802.16 working group is also studying ways to improve the coverage of base stations. Mesh networks allow data to jump from one point to another, bypassing obstacles such as mountains. Only a small number of grids can bring a significant improvement in the coverage of a single base station. If the group's proposal is adopted, they will become Task Force F and begin the development of the 802.16f standard. With the launch of this series of standards groups, I believe that WiMAX technology will become more mature and complete.


Although there are still many problems with WiMAX, such as unified standards, interconnection, and cost reduction.
